The right gear can make a big difference when you’re miles into the backcountry. After plenty of trial and error on the trail, these are the essentials and go-to items I’ve come to rely on for backpacking trips.
A Few Trail Favorites
I am on my third pair of these waterproof (GORE-TEX) wonders. No painful break-in period and fantastic ankle stability for all your rockhopping needs.
Tip: The Ultra Raptors are on their third iteration but if you’re looking for a deal, I recommend buying a “generation” back.
I am still using the first pack I bought almost 10 years ago. She’s been beat up and nibbled on but still holding up great. The back panel offers fantastic lower back support for heavy loads and there are tons of handy straps and cinches to attach your gear externally.
Tip: Get fitted for a pack in-person to make sure all the proportions are just right for your frame. You’ll thank yourself later when you’ve got a 20+ lb load.
Sawyer Dual-Threaded MINI Water Filter + any 1L water bottle
We’ve tried just about every approach to water filtration—bladders, squeeze bags, pumps, straws, and tablets. When water is plentiful along the trail, the Sawyer Squeeze paired with a 1L bottle has proven to be the lightest, simplest, and most functional setup.
Tip: If the original Sawyer cap breaks, you can replace it with sport cap off a plastic 1L bottle.
At just 2 lbs. 8 oz., this tent is a great lightweight option for longer trips. It’s a little snug for two, but the spacious vestibule keeps gear dry and out of the tent. Split between two people, you’ll barely notice the weight—and it’s still light enough to carry solo.
Tip: Mummy shaped sleeping pads and bags recommended for this tent shape.
This lightweight mug is big enough for a bowl of soup but I mainly use it for a cup of coffee or tea. The silicon HotLips prevent you from burning your lips on that Japanese titanium.
